NOW FULL: BigKidSmallCity Meet Up: Fire Station 8 Tour – June 30, 2016

Houston Fire Station 16 Mist of Fire Hose
It’s time for the 2nd fire station tour of the summer… and it is sure to fill up quick.  (If it’s like past fire station tours… it will be closed within 20 minutes!)

BigKidSmallCity is touring Fire Station 8, in Downtown, on Thursday, June 30, 2016.   On our last tours, we had the opportunity to meet the fire fighters, sit in the truck, spray the fire hose and tour the station! Join us as we do it again!

Since this is an active station, keep in mind that: “If for any reason the assigned station is unable to participate due to an emergency response call, you may not receive advance notice of their absence. If the station receives an emergency response call during the scheduled activity, they are required to proceed to the emergency, but will make every effort to return upon completion.”

Fire Station 8 is especially busy and during the last tours, the trucks left and came right back. All the kids got to see the fire fighters suit up and head out! Just be ready to have the outing not go perfectly as planned!

UPDATE: The event is NOW FULL!

Tour your local Houston Fire Station! It’s a free & unique thing to do in Houston!

Houston Fire Station 8 Garage
Visiting Houston Fire Stations has long been one of our favorite things to do.  This summer we’ve set up a series of meet-ups at local fire stations and they have been very very popular.

Just last week, we toured Houston’s biggest station: Fire Station 8 in Downtown.  And it was amazing.

Houston Fire Station 8 Jacket
Fire Station 8  is the biggest station in Houston, and I’m told it’s also one of the biggest in the United States.  It takes up a full city block and is buzzing with activity.

While we were there, lunch was being made, official visitors kept stopping by and fire engines kept coming and going.

Houston Fire Station 8 Trucks
Not only are there fire engines and ambulances, but there is a mass casualty ambulance, the size of a city bus, and a rehab truck, for fire fighters to recuperate while fighting a big fire.

Houston Fire Station 8 Kitchen Family Room
This new fire station is all on one level because 2 story fire stations and fireman poles are dangerous and outdated.  We got to tour through the great room, with the living room, giant dining table and kitchen, the exercise room, the offices and the sleeping quarters.  We also got to walk through the garage, see the trucks and spray a fire hose!

Tour Your Local Houston Fire Station!

Tour5There is not much that the BigKidSmallCity crew likes more than firefighters.  My biggest boy used to wear a full fireman suit to preschool, every single day.  I’m talking about overalls, jacket, boots and hat.  Everyday.  Regardless of the temperature.

JoeGearWe love the Houston Fire Museum and be frequently take our local fire station cookies and sweets.  We’ve even requested a firetruck to visit our school each year.  But we have finally had the ultimate HFD experience:  we toured a fire station.

Fire Station 16 Fire HoseAnd we loved it.

All we had to do was organize our friends and request the tour 30 days in advance HERE.  We received a confirmation email and we were set for the tour.  The only catch is that the station would remain in service.

From HFD:  The station is to remain in service unless otherwise noted. If for any reason the assigned station is unable to participate due to an emergency response call, you may not receive advance notice of their absence. If the station receives an emergency response call during the scheduled activity, they are required to proceed to the emergency, but will make every effort to return upon completion.
