During this election season, BigKidSmallCity is getting to know the candidates in the City of Houston election. Our goal in our non-partisan, non-political research is to help Houston kids better understand the political process.
This is not for political purposes or endorsement. This is for kids.
Aylen (7), Joe (6), Senia (5) and Brooke (4) created the questions and I edited for clarity. Below is the interview with Andrew Burks, Incumbent Candidate for City Council At-Large Position 2!
1) What does a city council member do?
Houston City Council has 5 At Large Members. I am the current Houston City Council Member At-Large Position 2 and my job is to represent the entire city making sure the city is safe; streets are repaired, neighborhoods have clean running water and residents have jobs. At Large City Council members, District City Council Members and the Mayor all work together to make certain Houston the best city in the country to live.
2) What do you do to get elected?
All registered voters in Houston elect the Houston At-Large members. In order to become a city council member, we must meet residents of Houston and share information on the issues we plan to tackle when elected. Meeting people is done through civic clubs, community meetings, knocking on people’s doors, visiting churches, etc.
3) What do you like to do in Houston?
I want to ensure you live the best life possible. I want to ensure you have a good education, live in a safe environment, dream great things and put those dreams into action.
4) What is your favorite thing about Houston?
My favorite thing about Houston is the beauty of its people and answering your questions. I believe if I can answer your questions truthfully, it will inspire you to be bold, courageous and committed leaders.
