Halloween Montster Mayhem at the Children’s Museum of Houston… Now through October 31, 2018!

Something spooky this way comes to the Children’s Museum of Houston!

There are spine-tingling experiments, spirit-lifting activities and slime-filled fun during the Halloween Monster Mayhem, now through October 31, 2018.

Meander your way through the Museum in search of goblins, goodies and goo!

Set out on a trick-or-treat quest every day from 4:00pm to 6:00pm on weekdays, 4:00pm to 8:00pm during Free Family Night Thursdays and all day on weekends through Halloween night!

We went trick-or-treating on a Friday at 5:00pm and it was not very busy at all.  We got through all the stations in 20 minutes and were able to play until closing.

You can also get slime-soaked during the 2nd Annual Slime-Off! on October 27, 2018.  (Space is limited and pre-registration is required.)  We did it last year and it was a messy and fun!

And go back on October 31, 2018 to the Halloween Monster Mash Bash (open till 8:00pm)!

Beat the Crowds at the Children’s Museum of Houston

The Children’s Museum of Houston is amazing.  Actually, it’s so amazing that EVERYONE is there.

So, we spoke with the staff and we’ve gone on all days and all hours… and these are our crowd-beating tips:

Least Busy Hours:

  • Go early or go late!  Most families arrive between 11:00am-2:00pm.
  • If you get there right at opening time and go straight to the activity you want to do (preferably away from the ticket counter), you will likely have 30 minutes before the crowds catch up with you!
  • If you arrive around 2:00pm, lots of field trips have left and the parents are headed to school pick up.
  • Go on “No Groups First Fridays”, which means every first Friday of the month, they museum does not book groups.
  • Thursday afternoons are the free hours… so these are crazy during the school year and the summer.  The one exception might be if you go right before the free hours… the calm before the storm.
  • A tip from Kathy… go during STAAR testing at Houston schools.
  • During the summer, it’s going to be busy.  The one trick is to go on Mondays.  The museum is closed Mondays during the school year… so often people don’t realize it is open on Mondays in the summer.  Also, arrive at opening or late on any day you go.

Busiest Hours:

  • Summer Break, Spring Break, Winter Break, Holidays and Weekends.  Anytime school is out of session.
  • On any day, families tend to arrive between 11:00am to 2:00pm.
  • Thursday evening is free admission each week.  It gets crowded!

Best Strategy for Visiting:

  • Get a membership or use free passes from the Houston Library FlipKits.  This way you can visit for 1 hour at a time, without feeling like you need to get your “money’s worth”.
  • The Children’s Museum is too big than to do absolutely everything in one trip.  Pick just one or two spots, based on what’s the least busy or what you really really want to do.  This way you can sit down, do the hands-on crafts and projects, and really enjoy your trip.
  • And to avoid the request to do “just one more thing”, I set the timer on my phone.  When the alarm goes off in 1 hour or 2 hours, or whatever we agreed on, it’s time go!

More Tips:

  • There is no splashpad at the Children’s Museum… but there is FlowWorks.  We get pretty wet out here, so consider bringing a swimsuit or a change of clothes.
  • You can cool off… by going outside.  You can often find a concession stand by the playground with $1 ice cream bars, popcorn and juice boxes.
  • Several of the activities require closed toed, closed heal shoes… no Crocs and no sandals if you want to do everything.
  • For older kids, you can be S.E.C.R.E.T. Agents. This lets you follow clues and complete tasks that keep you away from the crowds.
  • Eat at the Children’s Museum’s Fresh Cafe, check out these close by restaurants!

Your S.E.C.R.E.T. Mission Awaits at the Children’s Museum of Houston

Address:  1500 Binz, Houston, Texas 77004

Can you spot the S.E.C.R.E.T. Agent?

We were saving the Children’s Museum of Houston by picking  up codes and restoring order to the Children’s Museum!

Use critical thinking, problem solving, and creativity to uncover clues and solve puzzles… as a Secret Agent on a mission! The museum “hired” my secret agents to defeat the evil scientist Vex… and we completed the S.E.C.R.E.T. Mission last week.

The Museum was under siege and R.I.V.A.L. was attempting to steal the power from our crystals.  The kids took on the challenge and uncovered clues, cracked codes and outsmarted the villains!

If your kids want to be secret agents, here is what you need to know:

  • You can learn about the museum-wide “exhibit” HERE.
  • S.E.C.R.E.T. is designed for kids 8 and older.
  • You need to wear comfortable shoes.  These missions take you all over the museum!
  • We’ve now done three missions… and they seem to change a little each year.  There were new problems to solve this summer.
  • The Children’s Museum is INSANELY busy over the summer.  The cool thing about the Mission is that it’s a good way to visit the museum and to BEAT THE BUSY.  The mission control headquarters is only open to the Secret Agents, so it is not crowded.  Also, as you run around the museum collecting clues, you have very specific tasks and are not trying to compete with the other visitors and field trips in Kidtropolous, the rock wall or the other exhibits.
  • There are several different missions, so even if there are lots of secret agents at the museum, you do not bump into too many of them.
  • Each mission comes with book, museum map and gear.  The kids really do feel like spies, with a special wrist codex that unlock doors and log the agents into computers… plus other gear depending on the mission.
  • The missions are a good way to get the big kids interested in the museum again.
  • Each mission takes about one hour to complete.  We stopped for $1 ice cream bars, by the playground, so it took us a little longer!
  • General museum admission is $12 and free for members.  The first time you do a mission, it costs $20 to get the gear and do the mission.  If you go back for more, the new mission is $10 if you reuse your wrist codex.

If you have a secret agent that wants to uncover clues, crack codes and outsmart the villains, check out S.E.C.R.E.T.!

Try Out The Challenge Course at the Children’s Museum of Houston!

Have you seen the ropes course at the Children’s Museum of Houston? Located in the basement, The Challenge Course is free with museum admission..

Kids strap in to harnesses and then maneuver through the course. The front is relatively easy and the back is challenging even for the bigger kids.

To participate, kids must be between 5 and 15 years old, be between 42” and 64” tall and not exceed the maximum weight of 150lbs. The kids must wear closed toes and closed heeled shoes.

On a weekday after school, we jumped right on the course… BUT on weekends it can take forever to wait your turn. So, if you can swing it, go on a weekday!

My kids love ropes courses and usually ask to head to the big or little course at Moody Gardens for their birthdays.  This one is small but much closer and free… so I love it!
