The Ice at Discovery Green Presented by the Houston Chronical – November 17, 2012 – January 27, 2013

The Ice at Discovery Green is open for the season! From November 17, 2012 through January 27, 2013 you can skate for $12 (includes skate rental and tax).

We were so excited to have the ice reopen that we visited on Sunday at 11:30am.  We love wearing our short sleeves, walking past the kids playing at the splashpad and go ice skating while we listen to Christmas music.  Even with the worm weather, the ice was solid and not too wet.

That said, last year was too warm and the ice rink did need to close down on certain days, including the last week of the season.  For those that had pre-purchased tickets through daily deals, the manager has promised to honor them this year (as long as it had his signature on it).  Today, we arrived at the ice rink, spoke with the same manager and had our tickets honored just as promised.

For this year, be sure to check the website before heading out the door.  There will be announcements if the rink is closed due to weather or a special event.

Our tips for visiting The Ice are below:

  • Street parking is free on Sundays and other days after 6:00pm. Metered parking or paid lots are available at other times. We always love to ride METRORail to the Main Street Square Station and walk the 5 blocks east(ish) to Discovery Green.
  • Double blade skates are available for the little kids. These make it much easier to learn to skate.
  • Be sure to bring socks.  I also suggest pants instead of shorts or skirts.
  • Just like last year, there is a small practice rink for kids age 4 and under. Mom and dad can watch from the side while the little ones skate.
  • If only your kids are skating, you can get in for free.
  • Small lockers are available for $1.50 or you can leave anything that is not valuable on the benches.
  • You can bring in a stroller.
  • Skating time is limited to 1.5 hours (but they only seem to check when the rink is super busy).
  • Weekends, right at opening, and weekday afternoons seem to be the best times to go without the big crowds.
  • Be sure to check the calender for movies, concerts and special events on the ice.
  • Watch for cheap skate nights on Mondays from 4:00-10:00pm. Tickets are just $5 each.  The first one is on November 19, 2012.
  • Keep an eye on BigKidSmallCity for any daily deals that become available. Last year there were several opportunities to get 2 tickets for the price of 1.
  • The Ice at Discovery Green is open daily.  Go HERE for the hours.

We recommend visiting The Ice at Discovery Green this holiday season.  Even if you personally don’t skate, the little kids can wear the double blade skates and practice in the little rink.  Each year we’ve gone, I’ve kept James on solid ground while the big kids try out their skills.  After a half dozen visits, both Joe and Brooke were skating in the big rink, having a great time, and waving at me as they passed by.
