Train Tracks at Hermann Park
It’s August and time to get every single drop of fun out of summer break!  This is the list of things to do in Houston, with kids, for July 31-August 6.  For things to do August 7-13, 2014, go HERE.  For things to do August 14-20, go HERE.

Have you found Waldo all over town?  On Thursday you can celebrate with the party at Brazos Bookstore!

Saturday is one of my favorite Houston events: Hands-On Houston. This month you can make a free BraceLED… a light up bracelet!  Just stop by between 11:00 and 3:00pm to make your simple circuit!  Saturday is also White Linen Nights.  Find your cool white clothes and head to the streets of the Houston Heights for music, shopping, eating and people watching.

This weekend is your LAST CHANCE to see Pippi Longstocking: The Family Musical.  You need to go Saturday or Sunday to see this show that had my son, Mr. Serious, bent over, head on his knees, laughing.  It is 1.5 hours that you will talk about for a long time.

Finally, be sure to grab your little engineers and come join me for George Hermann’s 171st birthday on Wednesday.  There will be $1.71 train rides for kids, $1.71 ice cream for everyone, free birthday cake and lots of fun at the Hermann Park Kinder Train Station.

On Thursday you can support Young Texans Against Cancer, just by eating, shopping and rocking on Mid-Main.  This is one of my favorite strips along the train tracks and includes Natachees, the sandbox and kids meals in old school metal lunch boxes.

The popular Pop Up Library returns to Hermann Park on Friday.  Kids can enjoy a story and activity and go home with a backpack full of goodies, including a free pass to the Houston Children’s Museum.

On Saturday, Hermann Park Members can ride the train all day for free.  The annual membership is $50/family and allows you to skip the train line, get the train seats your kids really want, and ride for free on every 2nds Saturday.  AND it supports one of my favorite parks!

Saturday is also the free Phenology Hike at the Houston Arboretum and the free Summer Fun Squad at Ervan Chew Park.  At park, you can run through the splashpad, play games and jump in the bounce house!

For some indoor, air conditioned fun, join me at the NRG Center (Reliant) for the Mommie & Me event all day on Saturday.  There will be activities for kids and parents and a BigKidSmallCity booth.  Be sure to come introduce yourself to me because I love meeting members of the community!

Discovery Green is always a sure bet for fun.  This weekend there is a Hands-On Reptile Show, the weekly Young Writers Workshop and my favorite Flea by Night.  Browse the booths of local vendors, listen to live music, people watch and enjoy the urban oasis in the middle of Downtown’s skyscrapers.

Next week, Miller Outdoor Theatre has a week of children’s shows.  Watch Mulan, Jack and the Beanstalk and more!  Shows are always free.  Seats are for those that arrive first, but there is always space on the hill!

Finally, be looking for Pop Shops all over Houston.  On Tuesday, this free event is popping up at the Vinson Library and kids can make pom pom burgers and mountains!  The craft and location changes weekly, so go here to find an event near you!
