Things to do in Houston today, and this Labor Day weekend, with kids!  August 28, 29, 30, 31, September 1, 2, 3, 2014

Flowers at Discovery Green
The big kids are back to school and Houston venues are taking a minute to breathe.  The events list is much lighter this week, but there is still plenty to do in Houston!

Saturday is the Young Writers Workshop at Discovery Green and Toddler Tuesdays return this week.  On September 2, join BigKidSmallCity for the Thomas the Tank Engine storytime, character visit and trackless train!

On Wednesday, take the littlest ones to the Children’s Museum Tot Spot for a Mommy Mingle.  It’s free with admission and includes coffee, breakfast and conversation!

This is also the perfect week to do some exploring of your own:

Downtown from Minute Maid Park
Let’s get ready for back-to-school with a week jam packed with Houston fun! First, take the kids on a Journey Through China at Miller Outdoor Theatre on Thursday morning.  Then on Friday evening, party at the Houston Zoo’s End of Summer Luau and don’t miss the Snow Day on Saturday!  Also on Saturday, meet some Frogs & Salamanders at the Nature Discovery Center.

Sunday is a day we look forward to all year, with the Theater District Open House.   It is a free family day full of learning about Houston’s 9 major performing arts organizations.  There are live performances, activities, backstage tours, an instrument petting zoo, costumed performers and trolley rides between venues.

For the sports fan, the University of Houston is hosting a free community day. Stop by on Sunday afternoon to tour the new TDECU Stadium, meet the football players, play at the kid zone and eat $1 hot dogs and popcorn.

Finally, on Wednesday evening, head out for a special moms night out with Bayou City Mamas.  Learn about “Hot Spots for Tots”, eat dinner and get your swag bag.  BigKidSmallCity will be on the panel talking about things to do in Houston with kids… but I really want to hear YOUR ideas.  I learn new things from Houston Moms each day.   Get tickets HERE and use code “CITY” for $5 off!

Hard Rock Cafe from Preston Street Bridge
School might be starting soon, but we are determined to get every ounce of fun out of Summer 2014!

Summer Fun Squad is still going strong on Saturdays at Ervin Chew Park.  Take your kids for some free bouncing, games and splashing.  Afterwards, head to Brazos Bookstore for the End of Summer Celebration!  There will be prizes, games and snacks!

Also on Saturday is one of my very favorite Houston events: Flea by Night at Discovery Green.  I love to browse through the booths of local vendors, to grab dinner from the food trucks, listen to music on the stage and people watch.  After seeing it all at the Flea Market, we stop by the splashpad, playground, or even take a horse and carriage ride.

MetroRail Train in Mid Main
This events post, for August 7-13, 2014, is going up early so you can plan on the best August ever!

On Thursday you can support Young Texans Against Cancer, just by eating, shopping and rocking on Mid-Main.  This is one of my favorite strips along the train tracks and includes Natachees, the sandbox and kids meals in old school metal lunch boxes.

The popular Pop Up Library returns to Hermann Park on Friday.  Kids can enjoy a story and activity and go home with a backpack full of goodies, including a free pass to the Houston Children’s Museum.

On Saturday, Hermann Park Members can ride the train all day for free.  The annual membership is $50/family and allows you to skip the train line, get the train seats your kids really want, and ride for free on every 2nds Saturday.  AND it supports one of my favorite parks!

Saturday is also the free Phenology Hike at the Houston Arboretum and the free Summer Fun Squad at Ervan Chew Park.  At park, you can run through the splashpad, play games and jump in the bounce house!

For some indoor, air conditioned fun, join me at the NRG Center (Reliant) for the Mommie & Me event all day on Saturday.  There will be activities for kids and parents and a BigKidSmallCity booth.  Be sure to come introduce yourself to me because I love meeting members of the community!
