Video: My Favorite Things to Do in Houston, with Kids, December 18-24, 2014. (And why this terrifies me.)

Friends – Do you want to know what I think is terrifying? Seeing myself on video. So guess what I’m going to do? Provide a weekly video clip of my favorite things to do in Houston, with kids, for this week and weekend! Some day soon, I plan to look back at this and laugh at how scared I used to be.

So here you have it, my favorite things to do in Houston, with kids, for December 18-24!  Watch the clip below, or go HERE.  To help you navigate, here are some links mentioned in the video:

Things to do in Houston today, and this weekend, with kids! December 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 2014

Field of Light at Discovery Green Houston
Happy Holidays! Here are the things to do Houston through Christmas Eve. For a preview of things to do through New Years Eve, go HERE.

Get ready for Christmas with a holiday show!  You can see the all new Really Really Big Christmas Show at Second Baptist.  All ages are welcome and lap babies are admitted for free.  Extra shows have been added for Madeline’s Christmas  at Main Street Theater.

Discovery Green is always a great place for families. On Friday, you can watch a movie from the ICE or sidelines… it’s a little film called Frozen.  On Saturday, pick up your Christmas gifts at Discovery Green Flea and then visit the ICE to Skate with Santa.  On Sunday, head back for Chanukah On Ice.

On Sunday, take the family to Bayou Bend for Season of Joy.  Bayou Bend Family Days are free and start with a walk across the bayou on a cable bridge.  You can then wonder through the garden trails, make crafts, grab a snack, listen to music and tour the mansion.

Look below for the full list of things to do.  If you are planning for the holidays in Houston, go HERE for the list of Houston Holiday Events.

Favorite Houston Events for this Weekend (and Week): December 11-17, 2014

Listen to my favorite events for the weekend (and week) of December 11-17, 2014! To help you navigate, below are the posts mentioned in the audio clip:

Houston Zoo Lights 1
Make your plans for another great week and weekend in Houston!

The ICE is open at Discovery Green, the Zoo is lit up each night and 12 little girls in 2 straight lines are waiting to entertain your Madeline fan at Main Street Theater.

The Houston Symphony’s Night Before Christmas is on Saturday.  Even lap babies are allowed in the theater, so this hour long show is fun for the entire family.

Head to Hermann Park from 10:00am-2:00pm on Saturday for the Holiday Party at the train station.  There will be free crafts and face painting.  Also, since it’s the second Saturday, Hermann Park Members can ride the train for free, all day, without waiting in line.  Go back after dark to enjoy the lit up holiday train!  If you are not a member yet, ask for this $50 family membership for Christmas.  It gets you discounts at the cafe and gift shop, and free train rides each month.

Also on Saturday is the Gingerbread Build-Off at City Hall.  Watch the professional build edible masterpieces… and let the kids build in the kids construction area.

Visit a German Christmas Market in Tomball all weekend.  You can’t go wrong with live music, local vendors and old-fashioned Santas at the Tomball Train Depot.

Try something new and get dressed up for the Teddy Bear Tea at St. Regis.  If you go, be sure to tell us all about it!

At the ICE, Skate with Santa is on Saturday at 4:00pm.  Stop by the BigKidSmallCity table.  We’ll have crafts and a giveaway and I would really like to meet you there!

Discovery Green Field of Light Blue
Happy Holidays Houston!  This week and weekend you can find a lot of family fun around town…  Train rides, holiday shows, tree-lightings, ice skating and hands-on activities!

On Friday, take the family to the Mayor’s Holiday Celebration at City Hall.  There will be live entertainment and tree lighting.  If you live near Sugar Land, find the Tree Lighting at Sugar Land Town Square on Thursday.

Saturday is one of my favorite Houston monthly events: Hands-On Houston at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft.  Stop by to make your free Wax-Resist and Salt-Marbled Greeting Cards.

Every day of the week, visit the ICE at Discovery Green.  In addition to the big outdoor rink, the little kids can try the ice box.  A little rink for kids 4 and under lets them learn to skate while you stand on dry land.

At the ICE, Skate with Santa is on Saturday at 4:00pm.  Stop by the BigKidSmallCity table.  We’ll have crafts and a giveaway and I would really like to meet you there!

Listen to my favorite events for the weekend (and week) of November 20-26, 2014! To help you navigate, below are the posts mentioned in the audio clip:

Things to do in Houston today, and this weekend, with kids!  November 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26,  2014

The Ice at Discovery Green at Night
We’re marching up to Thanksgiving and the Houston events calendar is full of family friendly activities!

The Houston Zoo is lit up with millions of lights.  Wondering through after dark makes this familiar place seem brand new and magical.  Purchase tickets to Zoo Lights online each morning, to save a couple of dollars on admission.

Head to The Woodlands on Sunday for the Lighting of the Doves on the waterway.  Santa arrives by boat, the doves over the water are lit for the season and fireworks light up the night.  In the past there has been sledding and snow patches for the kids!  Entertainment is free all day, and tickets can be purchased for food and activities.

Also on Saturday is the opening of Field of Light at Discovery Green.  There will be 4,500 illuminated glass spheres on stems.  Each evening through February, you can see the stems “bloom” with colored lights at dusk.

On Sunday, take the kids to Madeline’s Christmas at Main Street Theater.  This production is mean for families and will have the kids dancing in their seats… and the pillow fight scene had my kids doubled over with laughter!

Next Tuesday, the ICE at Discovery Green opens at Discovery Green.  Even the youngest kids can give skating a try at the small toddler rink and with double bladed skates.  My 2 year old skated, with a little help, last year… in fact, I learned to skate last year!  Be watching this events list for events on the ice, including skating with Santa, cheap skate nights, movies from the ice, and more!
