Downtown from the Aquarium
Plan on another great week and weekend in Houston!

Discovery Green is always a sure bet for fun.  This weekend there is a Hands-On Reptile Show, the weekly Young Writers Workshop and my favorite Flea by Night.  Browse the booths of local vendors, listen to live music, people watch and enjoy the urban oasis in the middle of Downtown’s skyscrapers.

For fun on a slightly smaller scale, check out Summer Fun Squad at Ervan Chew Park on Saturday morning.  The free event includes a bounce house, games and the park’s splash pad!

Next week, Miller Outdoor Theatre has a week of children’s shows.  Watch Mulan, Jack and the Beanstalk and more!  Shows are always free.  Seats are for those that arrive first, but there is always space on the hill!

Finally, be looking for Pop Shops all over Houston.  On Tuesday, this free event is popping up at the Vinson Library and kids can make pom pom burgers and mountains!  The craft and location changes weekly, so go here to find an event near you!

Favorite Houston Events for this Weekend: July 3, 2014

What should we do on the 4th of July in Houston? You asked us!

fireworks
There is a lot going on in Houston for the 4th of July. There are backyard BBQs, neighborhood parades and giant firework displays (like Freedom Over Texas along Buffalo Bayou and A Star Spangled Salute at Hermann Park). We’ll start the day by riding red, white and blue bikes in grandma’s neighborhood parade. If you are looking for something similar, Bellaire has a parade that kids can lead. Just show up with your bikes and be ready to ride!

We also like to watch lots of firework shows, from a distance. Many years ago we decided that we could see all over town from the top of the University of St. Thomas parking garage and made plans to sneak up to the top after dark. Thinking we were so clever, we took our little family up the elevator just before the shows were to begin. When the doors opened, we found a party on top of the garage! We were being so clever, but there is an actual annual event and the public is welcome! You can see Freedom Over Texas, Hermann Park and more (all from a distance, of course). You can be super sneaky and come this year if you want a low key celebration!
