Things to do in Houston today, and this weekend, with kids!  November 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26,  2014

The Ice at Discovery Green at Night
We’re marching up to Thanksgiving and the Houston events calendar is full of family friendly activities!

The Houston Zoo is lit up with millions of lights.  Wondering through after dark makes this familiar place seem brand new and magical.  Purchase tickets to Zoo Lights online each morning, to save a couple of dollars on admission.

Head to The Woodlands on Sunday for the Lighting of the Doves on the waterway.  Santa arrives by boat, the doves over the water are lit for the season and fireworks light up the night.  In the past there has been sledding and snow patches for the kids!  Entertainment is free all day, and tickets can be purchased for food and activities.

Also on Saturday is the opening of Field of Light at Discovery Green.  There will be 4,500 illuminated glass spheres on stems.  Each evening through February, you can see the stems “bloom” with colored lights at dusk.

On Sunday, take the kids to Madeline’s Christmas at Main Street Theater.  This production is mean for families and will have the kids dancing in their seats… and the pillow fight scene had my kids doubled over with laughter!

Next Tuesday, the ICE at Discovery Green opens at Discovery Green.  Even the youngest kids can give skating a try at the small toddler rink and with double bladed skates.  My 2 year old skated, with a little help, last year… in fact, I learned to skate last year!  Be watching this events list for events on the ice, including skating with Santa, cheap skate nights, movies from the ice, and more!

Houston Zoo Lights 2013
It’s holiday time in Houston and there is a lot to do!

Our favorite youth theater has a new shop opening… Madeline’s Christmas!  Kids 3 and older will love this professional production.  No need to sit perfectly still or be perfectly quiet.  Kids wiggle, dance in their seats, laugh and giggle at Main Street.

Are you a Michael Jackson fan?  The Ultimate Michael Jackson Experience will be at Miller Outdoor Theatre on Friday evening! Free tickets are available at the box office the day of the show, between 10:30am and 1:00pm.  Also feel free find your own seating on the hill at showtime.

This weekend you can take a Polar Express Train Ride, departing in Palestine, visit Santa’s Wonderland, in College Station, and wonder through the Festival of Lights and Ice Land, at Moody Gardens!  Santa also arrives to Bass Pro Shops on Saturday, for free photos and crafts until Christmas!

A Houston Mom favorite, the Nutcracker Market, is at NRG (Reliant) Center on Thursday through Sunday.  Kids are allowed in, but it’s crowded and you cannot bring a stroller.  Take the girls for a little holiday shopping and people watching!

A Houston family favorite, Zoo Lights, opens at the Houston Zoo on Wednesday evening.  This year it will be even bigger than the last two seasons.  Purchase tickets online to save a couple dollars.

Oil Ranch Lake and Barn
Plan on another great weekend!  It’s nearly Halloween and families have a lot to do in Houston!

Start Saturday by painting the walls and floors at Main Street Theater, with professional graffiti artist Daniel Anguilu and sidewalk artist Life in Colors!

Get your pumpkin carved and blinged at Mandell Park on the same morning.  The first 20 kids can get a free pumpkin there.  Everyone can bring their own pumpkin to dress up or carve out at the park!  Just a short distance away is the family (and dog!) friendly Pup Crawl at Cherryhurst Park.  Put the kids and pups in costumes and party with the friends of the park.

Also on Saturday, trick or treat along the trail at the Houston Arboretum’s ArBOOretum!  There will be hayrides, petting zoo, hay maze, pumpkin decorating and puppet show!

On Saturday evening, travel to an Asian Night Market without leaving Houston.  The Asia Society is hosting the family friendly market with local vendors, music and food.

If you are in the Missouri City area, head to Flick-nic on the Lawn at Fort Bend Community Church.  Watch Wreck-It Ralph, jump in the moonwalks and grab dinner!

You can also catch Zoo Boo at the Houston Zoo, all weekend long. Go Friday to avoid some of the crowds!

On Monday, switch things up and have a moms-evening-out and join me at West U Wellness to learn about creative lunch boxes!  It’s sure to give you some great ideas for the (approximately) 5 million lunch boxes you still need to pack this school year!

And finally, join me at Toddler Tuesday: The Halloween Ball with Sofia the First and Mike the Knight. Visit the BigKidSmallCity booth to pick up a crown and say hello!
