If your child loves silly and nonsensical poems that are similar to Shel Silverstein’s work, then your kiddo will definitely enjoy this gem! This book is full of upbeat and silly, rhyming poems that range from a hiccuping hippo to a spoof of a fairy-tale and a boy who is half a werewolf.
Each poem tells an exaggerated story. The black and white illustrations done by Ethan Long compliment each poem perfectly. This book has over a hundred poems and BONUS: it also comes with a CD with over twenty poems narrated by the author!
This book was instantly and wildly popular at my house. I think part of its appeal is that it is about stinky sisters, embarrassing noises that your body might make and funny monsters.
Most of the poems in this book are short and can capture even your youngest one’s imagination right away. The child from the monster family who believes that she is the best looking person in her family was an instant hit with my five year old.
I particularly like the poem about the girl who cloned herself to help with her chores; unfortunately, her downfall was that her clones were exactly like her! Mental note, my future, imaginary clones can look like me but need to be as motivated as Jill from BigKidSmallCity.
My older daughter cannot get enough of this book that I have already order the follow up book, at her request, titled, The Tighty Whitey Spider: And More Wacky Animal Poems I Totally Made Up. I will let you guys know how the spider likes his tighty whities as soon as it comes in!
