George and Martha The Complete Stories of Two Best Friends by James Marshall – Books for Kids to Read

It’s Felicia! Today’s review is of George and Martha: The Complete Stories of Two Best Friends by James Marshall.

Have you guys ever heard of George and Martha? The two hippopotamus with the wonderful friendship that have marvelous adventures where ever they go? You really should!

This is a terrific book for anyone! My six year old use to love it when she was three and my eight year old still keeps it on her bookshelf. I even love reading this book about these mischievous and adorable hippos.

Each story has a moral but it is conveyed in a hysterical way and it is never preachy. This book is also full of what it is like to be a great friend! George, the male hippo, loves peeking in windows and one day, he goes too far and peeks in on Martha, the girl hippo, while she splashes about in the bathtub. He never did that again. Martha reminds him firmly, “We are friends, but there is such a thing as privacy.” George listens with a claw footed, cast iron bathtub sitting on his head!

One story features George’s favorite tooth. As he is roller-skating to his friend Martha’s house, he trips and cracks his tooth. As he lies sobbing, missing his favorite tooth, Martha expertly comforts his, only the way a best friend can. The next day, George’s dentist replaces his tooth with a gold tooth and when Martha sees his new tooth, she is very happy with how “distinguished “her friend looks. George, in turn, is happy too! He exclaims, “That’s what friends are for! They always look on the bright side and they always know how to cheer you up.” Martha smiles and retorts, “But they always tell you the truth!”.

Thank goodness, George and Martha caught my eye one day at a bookstore. We quickly upgraded to this anthology that has seven delightful books crammed into it. The only thing that makes me sad about it is that there are not anymore George and Martha adventures to read after turning page 350 on this book.
