Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch – Books for Kids to Read

It’s Felicia!  Today’s book review is of The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch

This book has been on my shelf for years now and I always forget about it because it is paperback and so very thin BUT when I do remember it, I spend an hour looking for it on my girls’ bookshelf so that we can read it together.

This book is about a princess who is slated to marry a prince when all of a sudden; a dragon swoops in, attacks the castle, singes her clothing, and kidnaps the prince.

Instead of pining for her prince, Princesses Elizabeth begins a journey to rescue her betrothed abandoning her life of luxury. She fashions a dress from a paper bag in a hurry to rescue her beloved Prince Ronald. Princess Elizabeth is extremely clever and practical which makes her a wonderful, modern, princess role model for my girls.

After hunting down the dragon, she flatters him into performing exhausting stunts and then when he is too tired to put up a fight, she seizes the opportunity to rescues her prince.

Is true love rewarded? Not at all! Turns out, Prince Ronald is kind of a jerk and complains that his rescuer is a “disaster” with her singed face and paper dress. Princess Elizabeth decides that the prince is really handsome, but very “useless”. She tells him, “You look like a real prince, but you are a bum.” She then decides not to marry him.

I love the twist ending and the messages that it sends girls. The first one being that boys and girls are equals. Another message my girls picked up is that if  someone does not appreciate you the way that you are and everything that you do for them, they are probably bums!

If you buy this book, buy the hardback! You will spend less time looking for it on your shelf!
