Books for Kids to Read – Mercy Watson Boxed Set – BigKidSmallCity Book Reviews

This is Felicia!   My girls and I love exploring Houston and we love to read.

This review is of the Mercy Watson Boxed Set by Kate DiCamillo.

The Mercy Watson series is exactly what I was looking for when looking for an interesting early chapter book for my five year old. There is a nice balance between the words, pictures, and the chaos that the pig, Mercy Watson, leaves in her wake.

The stories are exciting and, as a bonus, they introduce different vocabulary words that the usual beginner readers may not have. “Folly!” is a new word that my girls love, as well as “Unmentionable Horror” paired together.

What I love about the stories is that DiCamillo writes about this naughty pig who uses words that are not dumbed-down and so repetitive that it takes away from the story.

The illustrations are very sweet. Each page has a retro feel with bright, happy colors and cardigans on most of the main characters and Mercy Watson’s facial expressions are priceless. Illustrator Chris Van Dusen was the perfect person to bring Mercy to life.

Go HERE to find the book on Amazon.  Or, better yet, shop local and head to Brazos Bookstore.  If you mention you saw this review on BigKidSmallCity, you will get a discount… and get to read the book immediately!
