Books for Kids to Read – Books in My Basket – BigKidSmallCity Book Reviews

WonderDo you know anyone who reads all the time?  I do and it’s my friend Felicia.

Since her kids, ages 5 and 7, are excellent readers, and I have no reading plan of my own, I do my best to copy what she’s doing.  I used to do my best to keep it a secret and just thumb through her book collection while at her house.  She eventually caught on, so I’ve asked her just to send over a list of the books in her basket.

Now I know you might wonder if I would just copy anything she did… like if she jumped off a bridge, would I jump too?  Well, if she jumped first and was fine, I’d jump off too.  Especially if jumping meant that we could learn to love books like her family!

So, let me tell you what’s in her book basked today.

The Essential Calvin and Hobbes: Cute, clever and introduces new vocabulary words and lots of imagination to my 7 year old. We have some of the other books, but you know, as Aylen pointed out, this one is “Essential”.

The Dark by Lemony Snicket: I love Lemony Snicket so much that I want to be just like him when I grow up. This book is illustrated by Klassen, author of I Want My Hat Back, who is famously known for his dead pan illustration. The combined work of the 2 is a win.

Wonder:  Every summer I read aloud to my children a book about someone who may not look like them, learn like them or live life like them to reinforce the lesson that we are all different, but  our hearts all look the same. This year, before school starts, I am reading Wonder to them. It is about a boy with facial deformities.

Lady Cottington’s Pressed Fairy Book: A book about book pressed fairies in outrageous positions? How could I pass that up?

A Wrinkle in Time: The Graphic Novel: My absolute favorite book to give away and we have a birthday party to go to this weekend for a newly minted seven year old.

Where’s Waldo? The Fantastic Journey: Deluxe Edition: Clearly the very best Waldo edition. I remember when this series came out and they are wonderful for that last summer road trip!
