I am lucky to receive a zoo membership every year from my inlaws. The membership allows us to run in and out of the zoo and not feel like we need to spend all day in the hot Houston heat. That said, you can spend all day at the zoo and Hermann Park if you are interested.
Our typical zoo trip is either just after opening or just before closing. We visit a few animals, the carousel ($1.25 for children with membership) and then home. I often see parents paying to ride the carousel with their children, but this is not required if you stand next to your child instead of riding an animal. I let my kids pick the animals they want to see. Brooke usually wants to see the turtle that swims in the lake in the Tiger’s cage.
Parking is free, and usually easy, but can be a challenge on holiday weekends or during special events. We bring in our own snacks and drinks so we do not need to pay at the concession stands. Coolers allowed in and a lot of families have picnics on the zoo grounds. At our last picnic, two ducks paraded their babies right past us into the water. It was the coolest thing at the zoo that day.
What is your favorite thing to do at the zoo? How do you beat the heat?
